5x10 vs 10x10 Storage Unit

The Short Answer

A 5x10 storage unit is 50 square feet and holds about one small bedroom. A 10x10 is 100 square feet, holds a family room or two full bedrooms, and has a much wider door. At AA Personal Storage in Parowan, the 5x10 rents for $40 a month and the 10x10 for $65 (as listed in October 2026). Pick the 5x10 for boxes and a few small pieces. Pick the 10x10 the moment a couch, sectional, or large table is on the list.

Twice the floor space for $25 more a month sounds like an easy call, but it isn't always the right one. If you're storing boxes and a dresser, you'd be paying for empty air. If you're storing a sofa, the 5x10 may not even get it through the door. This guide puts the two sizes side by side with the real numbers from our facility so you can choose once and not have to move twice. If you're weighing every size we offer, our full storage unit size guide covers them all.

How Big Is Each Unit, Really?

Numbers on a screen are hard to picture, so here are some everyday comparisons. They're approximate, but they help.

The 5x10: about a large walk-in closet

A 5x10 is 5 feet wide and 10 feet deep. Picture a long walk-in closet, or a bit less than a quarter of a one-car garage. You walk in through the door and the space runs back from there. With a 9-foot ceiling, you can stack boxes well above head height, which is where most of a 5x10's real capacity comes from.

The 10x10: about a small bedroom

A 10x10 is a square, 10 feet on each side. Think of an empty small bedroom, or a little under half a one-car garage. Because it's square, you can arrange furniture along three walls and still keep a walkway down the middle. That makes it much easier to reach things you'll need before move-out day.

The Door Is the Real Difference

Most size guides talk only about floor space. At our facility, the door width matters just as much.

The 5x10 has a roll-up door 3.7 feet wide (about 44 inches). The 10x10's door is 8.5 feet wide (about 102 inches). Both are 7 feet 10 inches tall.

What that means in practice:

  • A standard sofa is usually about 3 feet deep and 7 feet long. It can sometimes go into a 5x10 standing on end, but it's a tight squeeze and the frame, legs, and fabric take the risk. In a 10x10, it rolls straight in on a dolly.
  • A sectional generally needs the 10x10's wider opening, plus the floor space to set pieces side by side.
  • A queen mattress is 60 inches wide, so it goes into a 5x10 on its side, standing up. That works fine. A king box spring (76 inches across) also goes in on edge because the door is nearly 8 feet tall.
  • Dining tables with fixed legs are often wider than 44 inches. If the legs don't come off, plan on the 10x10.
  • Appliances like a washer, dryer, or fridge are usually under 36 inches wide and fit through either door. A fridge is better in the 10x10, where it can stand upright with room around it.

Measure your widest piece before you rent. If anything is wider than about 42 inches and can't be turned or taken apart, skip the 5x10.

What Fits in a 5x10 Storage Unit

Our Rent page says a 5x10 fits "the contents of a small bedroom, including a queen-sized bed, a dresser, a TV, and several small to medium-sized boxes." A typical load looks like this:

  • A queen mattress and box spring, standing on edge along one wall
  • A disassembled bed frame
  • A dresser or chest of drawers
  • A nightstand or two
  • A flat-screen TV in its box or wrapped in a blanket
  • 15 to 25 medium boxes, stacked high
  • Small items like lamps, a desk chair, or a bike

It's also a great fit for things that aren't furniture: holiday decorations, camping gear, hunting gear in the off-season, tools, and the boxes that are crowding your garage. Our full "what fits in a 5x10" guide is coming soon.

Need just a little more? We also rent a 5x12.5 for $50 a month (October 2026). It has the same 3.7-foot door but 12.5 square feet more floor space, which is enough for an extra dresser or a dozen more boxes.

What Fits in a 10x10 Storage Unit

Our Rent page says a 10x10 fits "the contents of an entire family room or two full bedrooms, including several small to medium-sized boxes." A typical load:

  • A sofa and loveseat, or a sectional
  • A queen or king bed, mattress and frame
  • A dresser, a nightstand, and a bookshelf
  • A dining table with four chairs
  • A TV and TV stand
  • A washer and dryer, or a fridge
  • 25 to 40 medium boxes

That's most of a one-bedroom apartment. We cover the 10x10 in much more detail, including packing layouts, in our full 10x10 guide. If you're packing up a one-bedroom place, a dedicated guide on sizing for a 1-bedroom is on the way.

Cost: Is the 10x10 Worth $25 More?

Here's the math with our October 2026 rates:

  • 5x10: $40 a month, or $480 a year
  • 10x10: $65 a month, or $780 a year

The 10x10 costs $25 more each month, $300 more over a year. But it gives you twice the space, so the price per square foot actually drops from $0.80 to $0.65. If you'd fill even 70% of a 10x10, it's the better deal.

Two common mistakes cost people more than the rent difference:

  1. Renting two 5x10s instead of one 10x10. Two 5x10s would run $80 a month, $15 more than a single 10x10, and you'd lose the wide door.
  2. Squeezing into a 5x10 and then upgrading. Moving your stuff a second time costs a Saturday, a truck, and maybe a helper or two. If you're on the fence, it's usually cheaper to start in the 10x10.

On the other hand, if your list is mostly boxes and small items, the 5x10 saves you $300 a year with no downside. Don't rent space you won't use.

Which One Should You Pick?

Pick the 5x10 if:

  • Your list is mostly boxes, bins, and seasonal gear
  • Your largest piece is a queen mattress, a dresser, or something that comes apart
  • You're storing a dorm room, a studio's overflow, or a garage cleanout
  • You're decluttering before listing a house and need to clear a room or two of extras

Pick the 10x10 if:

  • A sofa, sectional, or dining table with fixed legs is on the list
  • You're moving out of a one-bedroom apartment or clearing two full bedrooms
  • You want a walkway so you can reach things during the rental
  • You're storing appliances you want to keep upright

Look past both if you're storing a two- or three-bedroom home. Our 10x15 ($75 a month as listed in October 2026) holds about three bedrooms and larger items like a piano.

Common Situations Around Parowan and Cedar City

People in Iron County rent small units for a handful of reasons, and each one points to a different size:

  • SUU students heading home for summer: a 5x10 usually holds a dorm room's worth of stuff, with room for a mini fridge and a bike.
  • Moving between homes in Parowan, Cedar City, or Enoch: if there's a gap between closing dates, a 10x10 holds a one-bedroom's furniture and keeps your sofa off a friend's porch.
  • Brian Head cabin owners: a 5x10 is a handy place for ski gear, spare linens, and summer furniture in the off-season, and we're 12.7 miles north on UT-143.
  • Garage and shop cleanouts: tools, bins, and yard equipment fit easily in a 5x10. Add a riding mower or a workbench and you'll want the 10x10.
  • Home renovations or staging: moving the extra furniture out of a few rooms usually takes a 10x10.

One rule that applies to both sizes: vehicles aren't allowed in enclosed units. If you're storing an RV, boat, trailer, snowmobile, or ATV, our outdoor parking is the place for it. Snowbirds parking a trailer for the season should also read our guide on how to winterize your RV before temperatures drop.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of a Small Unit

Whichever size you pick, packing smart lets you store more and reach it later:

  • Go vertical. Both units have 9-foot ceilings. Use uniform, sturdy boxes so stacks don't lean, and put the heaviest boxes on the bottom.
  • Stand mattresses on edge along a side wall, wrapped in a mattress bag.
  • Take legs off tables and beds and keep the hardware in a labeled bag taped to the piece.
  • Keep a walkway in a 10x10, and in a 5x10 put the things you'll need first near the door.
  • Label every box on two sides so you can read it from the aisle.
  • Store only allowed items. No gasoline, propane, fireworks, perishable food, or anything wet or moldy. The full list is in our storage FAQ.

Locks and Protection

Most units need your own disc lock, though a few come with a lock and key on the floor. If you use a disc or cylinder lock and add one of our Tenant Protection plans, you avoid the $200 deductible. Plans run from $2,000 to $15,000 in coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 5x10 or 10x10 storage unit better for a one-bedroom apartment?

A 10x10 is usually the better fit for a one-bedroom apartment. It holds a sofa, a bed, a dresser, a small dining set, and 25 or more boxes, and its 8.5-foot door takes large furniture easily. A 5x10 only works if you're storing just the bedroom or mostly boxes.

How much is a 5x10 vs a 10x10 storage unit in Parowan?

At AA Personal Storage, a 5x10 rents for $40 a month and a 10x10 for $65 a month, as listed in October 2026. Both are month to month. A $50 reservation fee holds a unit for 25 days and is credited toward your move-in charges. Check our Rent page for current rates.

Will a couch fit in a 5x10 storage unit?

Sometimes, but it's tight. Our 5x10 doors are 3.7 feet wide, so a standard sofa has to go in standing on end, and sectionals usually won't fit at all. If a couch is on your list, the 10x10, with its 8.5-foot-wide door, is the safer choice.

Can I switch from a 5x10 to a 10x10 later?

Yes. All our units rent month to month, so you can move to a bigger or smaller unit when your needs change, as long as one is available. Call us at (435) 447-4777 and we'll help you switch. Keep in mind you'll have to move your things between units.

Can I get into my storage unit any time?

Yes. AA Personal Storage is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no office hours to plan around. You can rent online and get move-in instructions by email or text without meeting anyone, and every unit is ground level with drive-up access.
