Drive-up storage units at AA Personal Storage in Parowan, Utah

Picking a storage unit size is the step most people get wrong. Go too small and you're playing Tetris with a couch in the parking lot. Go too big and you pay every month for air. This guide walks through every unit size we offer at AA Personal Storage in Parowan, what realistically fits in each, and how to choose the right one whether you live in Parowan, Cedar City, Paragonah, Summit, Enoch, or up the canyon in Brian Head.

All of our units are ground level with drive-up access, the facility is paved right up to every unit door, and rentals are month to month. That makes sizing easier: if you guess wrong, you can change units instead of being locked into a long contract.

Quick Answer: What Size Storage Unit Do I Need?

Now let's look at what actually fits.

Small Storage Units (5x10, 5x12.5, 10x10)

What fits in a 5x10 storage unit?

A 5x10 is about the size of a large walk-in closet: 50 square feet with a 9-foot ceiling. It holds the contents of a small bedroom, including a queen bed, a dresser, a TV, and several small to medium boxes.

It's a great fit for:

  • College students heading home for the summer
  • Seasonal stuff like holiday decorations, camping gear, and ski or snowboard gear
  • Holding boxes while you stage a house for sale
  • Small business files and product overflow

One thing to plan around: the 5x10 and 5x12.5 units have a roll-up door about 3.7 feet wide. Most dressers and mattresses go through fine, but measure wide items like sectional pieces before moving day.

What fits in a 5x12.5 storage unit?

The 5x12.5 adds 12.5 square feet over the 5x10, which is usually enough for an extra stack of boxes, a bike, or a small table. If you're right on the edge between "a few boxes" and "a whole bedroom," this size gives you breathing room for $10 more a month.

What fits in a 10x10 storage unit?

The 10x10 is the most searched storage size for a reason. At 100 square feet with a 9-foot ceiling, it holds the contents of a family room or two full bedrooms, plus several small to medium boxes. Think a couch, a loveseat, a coffee table, a TV stand, two beds, and dressers.

The 10x10 also has a much wider door, about 8.5 feet, so couches and bed frames slide in without a fight. It's the sweet spot for:

  • Moving out of a one- or two-bedroom apartment
  • Storing furniture during a home remodel
  • Couples combining households and sorting out duplicates

Medium Storage Units (10x14, 10x15, 10x25)

10x14 walk-in unit

Our 10x14 walk-in has an oversized walk-in door (about 3.5 feet wide) and is the one unit type on our Rent page listed with inside lighting. It fits about three bedrooms of furniture. Because it has a walk-in door instead of a roll-up, it works best for boxes, files, shelving, and furniture that fits through a regular doorway. It often has a waiting list, so ask about it early.

What fits in a 10x15 storage unit?

A 10x15 gives you 150 square feet. It fits the contents of three full bedrooms plus larger items such as a piano, couches, tables, or large-screen TVs, along with medium and large boxes. We have 10x15 units with both 9-foot and 10-foot ceilings, so if you stack tall or have tall shelving, ask for the 10-foot version.

This is the size most families choose when they're between homes, like when a house in Parowan closes before the new place in Cedar City is ready.

What fits in a 10x25 storage unit?

At 250 square feet, a 10x25 holds the contents of a multi-bedroom house, including oversized items like a couch, a refrigerator, a washer and dryer, a dining room set, and plenty of boxes. Its long, narrow shape is easy to load from front to back: put what you need least at the back and work forward.

Large and Extra-Large Storage Units (14x20, 15x20, 20x25, 20x26)

14x20 storage units

The 14x20 gives you 280 square feet and comes in 10-foot and 11.5-foot ceiling heights. That extra height matters for tall bookcases, stacked bed frames, and lots of boxes. It holds a multi-bedroom house with major furniture and appliances.

15x20 storage unit

The 15x20 (300 square feet) has the widest door we offer, about 11.5 feet. If you're storing wide furniture, a big workbench, shelving units, or palletized business inventory, that wide door makes loading much easier. (See our guide on storing items on pallets.)

20x25 and 20x26 storage units

Our biggest units are 500 and 520 square feet. The 20x26 has a 12-foot ceiling and holds about what a 40-foot moving van would: the contents of a four-bedroom house with major appliances. These work well for:

  • Full household moves into or out of Iron County
  • Estate clean-outs and downsizing
  • Contractors and small businesses storing equipment and materials

One important note: we don't allow vehicles to be stored inside the enclosed units, even the big ones. For cars, trucks, boats, RVs, and trailers, use our outdoor parking spaces.

Outdoor Boat, RV, and Trailer Parking in Parowan

If you live in Parowan Valley, there's a good chance you own something with a hitch. We offer outdoor Boat/RV/Trailer parking in two sizes:

  • 10x30 spaces for utility trailers, boats, side-by-side trailers, and shorter campers
  • 12x40 spaces for longer travel trailers and RVs

All of our outdoor parking is uncovered. The facility is right off I-15, so you can pull your trailer out and be on the freeway in minutes, whether you're heading to Lake Powell or up UT-143 toward Brian Head and Panguitch Lake.

Measure your rig from the tongue or hitch to the rear bumper, ladder, or spare tire before you pick a space. Those extras add more length than most people expect.

How to Choose the Right Size (Without Overpaying)

  1. List your big items first. Beds, couches, dressers, tables, and appliances take up most of the space. Boxes fill in around them.
  2. Count your boxes honestly. A typical bedroom is 10 to 15 boxes. A kitchen can easily be 20 or more.
  3. Use the ceiling height. Our units are 9 to 12 feet tall. Stacking sturdy boxes high can save you from renting the next size up.
  4. Leave an aisle. A center aisle makes it possible to reach things without unloading the whole unit. Our post on how to pack your storage unit for easy use shows how.
  5. Check the door width. Small units have narrower doors. If you have a sectional or king bed frame, a 10x10 or larger is usually easier.
  6. When in doubt, go one size up for a move, one size down for long-term storage. Moves are messy and you'll want room to work. For long-term storage you can pack tight and save money.

What to Know Before You Rent

  • Rent online, no appointment needed. You can rent right from our Rent page. Once the unit is rented, you'll get an email or text with move-in instructions.
  • Reservations: You can reserve a unit for a $50 reservation fee that's applied to your move-in charges. The reservation holds the unit for 25 days. If you don't move in within 25 days, the fee is non-refundable.
  • Bring a lock. Most units need your own lock (a few have a lock and key already assigned). A disc or cylinder lock is recommended, and it also helps you avoid the $200 deductible on our Tenant Protection plans, which range from $2,000 to $15,000 in coverage.
  • Access is 24/7/365. Load in after work or before sunrise. No office hours to plan around.
  • Payment: We accept Visa, Mastercard, and Discover, and you can pay online.
  • Security: The property is monitored by video surveillance cameras 24 hours a day.
