Hunting Gear Storage Tips

The best hunting gear storage keeps gear clean, dry, organized by hunt, and away from strong odors, with ammunition and fuel kept at home. At AA Personal Storage in Parowan, Utah, most hunters fit their off-season gear in a 5x10 unit ($40 a month), and a 10x30 outdoor space ($30 a month) holds an ATV or side-by-side trailer (rates as listed in November 2026).

Utah's big game seasons run from mid-August into November, and by the last elk hunt most garages are full of packs, blinds, decoys, and camo. This guide covers how to clean and store each type of gear, how to keep clothes scent free, what never goes in a unit, and which size fits. If you are still deciding on a size, our full storage unit size guide compares every unit we rent.

When Should You Put Hunting Gear Into Storage?

Put gear away right after your last hunt of the year, once it is cleaned and fully dry. In southern Utah that is usually November, after the general-season rifle and muzzleloader hunts close.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) publishes season dates each year. In 2026, general-season dates included:

2026 general-season hunt Dates
Archery buck deer and archery elk Starts Aug. 15
Muzzleloader buck deer Sept. 23 to Oct. 1
Any legal weapon (rifle) any-bull elk Oct. 3 to 9 (early) and Oct. 10 to 16 (late)
Any legal weapon (rifle) spike-bull elk Oct. 3 to 15
Any legal weapon (rifle) buck deer Oct. 17 to 25
Muzzleloader elk Oct. 28 to Nov. 5

Dates come from the DWR's 2026 big game guidebook, and they change every year, so check wildlife.utah.gov. Nearby general-season deer units include Panguitch Lake and Southwest Desert. If you still hunt waterfowl or upland birds this winter, keep that gear at the front of your unit.

How Do You Store Hunting Clothes So They Stay Scent Free?

Wash hunting clothes in a scent-free detergent, dry them outdoors or on a no-scent cycle, and seal them in airtight totes or scent-control bags. Store the sealed totes away from fuel, cleaners, food, and anything with a strong smell.

Scent control is mostly about keeping clothes away from household and garage odors, and a storage unit helps because your camo is not hanging next to the lawn mower or the kitchen:

  1. Wash everything first. Use an unscented, hunting-specific or fragrance-free detergent. Skip dryer sheets and fabric softener.
  2. Dry completely. Line-dry outside if the weather allows, or use a dryer with no scented products in it. Damp clothes can mildew in a sealed bin.
  3. Seal it. Airtight plastic totes with gasket lids, or scent-control bags, keep clothes clean and dust free. Some hunters add a handful of local sagebrush, pine, or cedar needles to the tote as a natural cover scent.
  4. Separate by season. Keep early-season lightweight camo in one tote and late-season insulated layers in another. Label the outside, not the inside.
  5. Keep boots separate. Clean mud off boots, let them dry fully, and store them in their own bin so they do not transfer odor to clothing.

How Do You Clean and Store Each Type of Hunting Gear?

Clean every item, let it dry, remove batteries, and store it in labeled bins or on shelves, grouped by the hunt you use it for.

Gear Before storing How to store
Packs and game bags Empty pockets, wash out blood, dry fully Hang or lay flat; store game bags only if washed and dry
Blinds and tree stands Brush off dirt and seeds, check straps and hardware Fold and bag blinds; stand tree stands upright against a wall
Decoys Wipe clean, dry, check for damage Decoy bags or slotted totes so they do not dent
Optics and range finders Clean lenses with a lens cloth, remove batteries Padded cases inside a sealed tote
Trail cameras Pull SD cards and batteries Small labeled bin with the mounting straps
Boots and waders Clean, dry inside and out, hang waders upside down if possible Boot bin or rack, never folded wet
Knives and saws Clean, dry, light coat of oil Sheathed, in a drawer-style organizer
Coolers Wash with soap and water, dry with the lid open Store with the lid cracked so it does not hold odor
Archery gear Inspect strings and cams, wax string Bow case, kept flat, away from direct heat

Batteries left in GPS units, headlamps, trail cameras, and range finders can leak and ruin the device, so pull them all before storage.

What Hunting Gear Ideas Keep a Storage Unit Organized?

Use shelving, clear labeled totes, and wall hooks so you can find gear in minutes and get out the door early on opening morning. Put the items you use most at the front.

A few hunting gear storage ideas that work well in a drive-up unit:

  • Freestanding metal shelving along one or both side walls, with heavy items on the bottom shelf.
  • One tote per hunt type: archery, rifle deer, elk, waterfowl, upland. Each tote holds that hunt's calls, gloves, face masks, and small gear.
  • A "grab and go" bin by the door with headlamps, knife, game bags, tags holder, and a first aid kit.
  • Hooks or a pegboard for packs, bow cases, and folding chairs.
  • A clear center aisle so you can reach the back without unloading the front.

Our units have no inside lighting, so keep a headlamp or battery lantern in the grab-and-go bin. Since tenants have access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, a headlamp makes a 4 a.m. stop before a hunt easy. For more layout ideas, see our tips on how to pack your storage unit for easy use.

What Should You Not Store With Your Hunting Gear?

Do not store ammunition, gunpowder, primers, fuel, propane, or game meat in a storage unit. The AA Personal Storage FAQ lists explosives and ammunition, flammable materials, and perishable food or anything that attracts pests as prohibited.

For hunters, that means:

  • Ammunition, gunpowder, primers, and black powder stay at home. Our FAQ prohibits explosives and ammunition.
  • Fuel cans, camp stove fuel, and propane tanks stay out. Flammable and hazardous materials are not allowed.
  • Game meat, jerky, and snacks go home. Perishable food is not allowed.
  • Bait, feed corn, and attractant scents draw rodents. Leave them out.
  • Wet or bloody gear should be cleaned and dried first. The FAQ also prohibits wet or moldy items and anything with a strong odor.
  • Vehicles such as ATVs and side-by-sides are not allowed inside enclosed units. They go in outdoor parking instead.

Firearms are not addressed in our FAQ. Most hunters keep firearms in a locked gun safe at home, and if you have questions about storing anything not listed here, call us at (435) 447-4777 before you move in. See the full prohibited items list on our FAQ page.

What Size Storage Unit Do You Need for Hunting Gear?

Most hunters need a 5x10 unit ($40 a month), which holds shelving, totes, packs, decoys, a blind, and a cooler. Hunters with lots of decoys, a tree stand collection, or a full camp setup often choose a 10x10 ($65 a month).

Your gear Suggested size at AAPS Monthly rate (Nov 2026)
Clothes, packs, optics, a few totes 5x10 (50 sq ft) $40
Above plus blinds, decoys, cooler, and shelving 5x10 or 5x12.5 (62.5 sq ft) $40 to $50
Full camp: wall tent, cots, stove, chairs, multiple hunters' gear 10x10 (100 sq ft) $65
ATV, side-by-side, or utility trailer 10x30 outdoor parking $30
Truck camper or camp trailer 10x30 or 12x40 outdoor parking $30 or $40

A few notes on these sizes:

  • The 5x10 and 5x12.5 units have a 3.7-foot-wide roll-up door and a 7'10" door height, so long items like tree stand ladders should go in standing up or angled. See what fits in a 5x10 storage unit for a full list.
  • The 10x10 has an 8.5-foot-wide door, which makes it much easier to load a wall tent, cots, or a camp kitchen box. Compare the two in our 5x10 vs 10x10 storage unit guide.
  • Snowmobiles and ATVs are welcome in outdoor parking, on a trailer or parked in the space. See our RV parking sizes guide to measure a trailer.

As of November 3, 2026, the 10x10 showed "Only 1 left!" and the 10x30 showed "Only 3 left!" on our Rent page, so check availability for a 5x10 or 10x10 in Parowan before you plan your move-in.

How Do You Protect Hunting Gear From Cold and Pests in Storage?

Keep gear off the floor, sealed in plastic totes, and free of food or odors. Our drive-up units are not climate controlled, so pack items that can be damaged by cold or moisture with extra care.

Parowan sits at about 6,155 feet, and Western Regional Climate Center averages for the Parowan station show lows near 24°F in November and about 16°F to 17°F in December and January. A few precautions help:

  • Use pallets or shelving to keep totes and boots off the concrete floor.
  • Pick sealed totes over cardboard boxes, which soak up moisture and attract pests.
  • Bring expensive electronics home if they are not rated for freezing temperatures.
  • Avoid food and attractants of any kind. Rodents are drawn to food, feed, and some scent products.
  • Check your unit every few weeks, especially after a big storm.
