Storage Unit Size for a 4-Bedroom

Most full 4-bedroom houses need a 20x25 or 20x26 storage unit, a lightly furnished or partially emptied 4-bedroom can fit in a 10x25 or 14x20, and a full 4-bedroom with garage and basement gear usually needs the 20x26. At AA Personal Storage in Parowan, Utah, a 10x25 rents for $125 a month, a 14x20 for $145, a 15x20 for $155, a 20x25 for $200 (waiting list), and a 20x26 for $210 (as listed in November 2026).

Picking the right storage unit size for a 4 bedroom house is mostly about how much stuff you own, not the bedroom count alone. This guide covers a size chart, a room-by-room checklist, door and ceiling sizes at our Parowan facility, and a packing plan. Compare every size we rent in our full storage unit size guide.

What Size Storage Unit Do I Need for a 4-Bedroom House?

For most families emptying a full 4-bedroom house, a 20x25 or 20x26 is the right size. Our Rent page describes those units as fitting "the contents of a four-bedroom house with some major appliances" and holding "the contents of about a 40 ft. moving van." A remodel or lightly furnished home can work in a 10x25 or 14x20. Rates below are from our Rent page on November 5, 2026.

Your 4-bedroom Suggested size Floor space Monthly rate at AAPS
Light / remodel: clearing furniture only, few appliances, under about 60 boxes 10x25 250 sq ft $125
Partial empty: three to four bedroom sets, sofa, dining set, washer and dryer 14x20 280 sq ft $145
Average full house leaning compact: four bedrooms, living room, kitchen, some garage gear 15x20 300 sq ft $155
Average full 4-bedroom house with appliances 20x25 or 20x26 500 or 520 sq ft $200 waitlist / $210
Full house with garage, basement, bulky furniture, or a piano 20x26 520 sq ft $210

These are estimates, and box counts are general rules of thumb. AA Personal Storage does not offer a 10x20; our ladder jumps from 10x15 to 10x25, then to 14x20 and larger.

Can a 4-Bedroom Fit in a 10x25 Storage Unit?

Sometimes, but only if you are not storing the whole house. Our Rent page says the 10x25 fits "the contents of a multi-bedroom house, including several oversized items like a couch, a refrigerator, a washer/dryer and a dining room set." That works for a light 4-bedroom or a remodel; a full house with garage and basement gear usually outgrows 250 square feet.

A 10x25 fits when you are clearing furniture during a remodel, kids' rooms use twin beds, you leave appliances behind, and you pack tightly with mattresses on end. It has a 9-foot ceiling and a door 8 feet wide by 7 feet 10 inches tall, and it showed "Only 1 left!" in early November 2026. See what fits in a 10x25 storage unit or what fits in a 10x15 storage unit.

When Do You Need a 14x20 or 15x20 for a 4-Bedroom?

Step up to a 14x20 ($145 a month) or 15x20 ($155 a month) when a 10x25 feels tight but you do not yet need a 20x26. These sizes fit a 4-bedroom that is mostly furniture and appliances without a packed basement.

Feature 10x25 14x20 15x20
Floor space 250 sq ft 280 sq ft 300 sq ft
Ceiling height 9 ft 10 or 11.5 ft 10 ft
Door width 8 ft 7 ft 11 in 11.5 ft
Door height 7 ft 10 in 8 ft 8 ft
Monthly rate (Nov 2026) $125 $145 $155

These units are wider than a 10x25, so you can stack furniture in two rows. Our Rent page says they fit "the contents of a multi-bedroom house, including several oversized items like a couch, a refrigerator, a washer/dryer and a dining room set." The 15x20 has the widest enclosed door we offer at 11.5 feet; the 14x20 offers an 11.5-foot ceiling option for taller stacks.

Why Do Most Full 4-Bedrooms Need a 20x25 or 20x26?

Because the rent page sizes those units for a four-bedroom house. Word for word: "It fits the contents of a four-bedroom house with some major appliances. Will hold the contents of about a 40 ft. moving van."

The 20x26 is 520 square feet with a 12-foot ceiling and a door 9 feet 11 inches wide by 8 feet tall, at $210 a month. The 20x25 is 500 square feet with the same door width at $200 a month; it was on a waiting list on November 5, 2026, while the 20x26 showed "Only 1 left!" Plan on this size for four bedroom sets, a sectional, dining set, appliances, and garage or basement overflow, or roughly 100 or more boxes (a general estimate). If your inventory looks closer to a 3-bedroom, see our storage unit size for a 3-bedroom guide first.

How Do You Estimate Your 4-Bedroom Room by Room?

Count big items first; furniture fills a unit faster than boxes. Here is a typical 4-bedroom checklist.

Primary bedroom

  • Queen or king bed, frame, and headboard (stand mattresses on end)
  • Dresser, two nightstands, a chest of drawers or armoire
  • 10 to 15 boxes of clothes, shoes, and linens

Three more bedrooms

  • Three twin, full, or queen beds, or a mix that includes a home office desk
  • Three small dressers, bookshelves, toy bins, or file cabinets
  • 15 to 25 boxes combined (a general estimate)

Living room

  • Sofa or sectional, recliner, coffee table, end tables
  • TV wrapped or in its box, TV stand
  • 8 to 12 boxes of books, decor, and electronics

Kitchen and dining

  • Dining table and six to eight chairs
  • Refrigerator, washer, and dryer, if they go with you
  • 15 to 20 boxes of dishes, pots, and pantry items (non-perishable only)

Garage and yard

  • Lawn mower (drain the gas first), bikes, tools, shelving
  • Holiday decorations, camping gear, sports equipment
  • 15 to 25 boxes and bins

Optional basement or bonus room

  • Extra sofa, guest bed, workout gear, or storage totes
  • 10 to 20 boxes of seasonal and overflow items

Near the top of each range with appliances plus garage and basement gear, plan on a 20x26. Skip the basement and leave appliances behind, and a 14x20 or 15x20 may be enough.

What Are the Door and Ceiling Sizes at AA Personal Storage?

All units are drive-up and ground level with roll-up doors, and asphalt runs up to every unit so you can back a truck to the door. None of these enclosed units have inside lighting, so plan daylight moves or bring a battery lantern.

Unit Door (width x height) Ceiling Rate
10x15 (9 ft) 8.7 ft x 8 ft 9 ft $75
10x15 (10 ft) 7 ft 10 in x 8 ft 10 ft $75
10x25 8 ft x 7 ft 10 in 9 ft $125
14x20 7 ft 11 in x 8 ft 10 or 11.5 ft $145
15x20 11.5 ft x 8 ft 10 ft $155
20x25 9 ft 11 in x 8 ft 9 ft $200 waitlist
20x26 9 ft 11 in x 8 ft 12 ft $210

Measure your largest piece before you choose. Anything under 7 feet 10 inches tall fits every door on this list.

How Do You Pack a 4-Bedroom Into a Storage Unit?

Load the heaviest, least-needed items at the back and keep a walkway. A good plan for a 15x20 or 20x26:

  1. 1. Back wall: refrigerator, washer, dryer, and mattresses standing on end.
  2. 2. Sides: dressers and bookshelves with boxes stacked on and in them. Use dresser drawers for linens.
  3. 3. Middle: sofa or sectional on end, tables with legs removed, chairs stacked seat to seat.
  4. 4. Front: boxes you will need soon, labeled on two sides, plus tools and seasonal gear.

Use same-size boxes, keep heavy boxes under 50 pounds, and put pallets or plastic sheeting under items on the concrete floor. Prop refrigerator and washer doors slightly open. More tips: how to pack your storage unit for easy use.

What Should You Not Store From a 4-Bedroom?

Our FAQ lists what tenants may not store. When clearing out a whole house, the items people most often forget are:

  • Gasoline, propane tanks, paint thinner, and other flammable or hazardous materials
  • Fireworks, explosives, and ammunition
  • Perishable food and unsealed pet food
  • Plants and anything wet, moldy, or leaking
  • Tires, unless they are on a vehicle in outdoor parking

Drain gas from mowers and small engines, and empty the fridge and freezer before they go in the unit.

If Your House Is Closer to a 3-Bedroom, Should You Size Down?

Yes. Bedroom count is a starting point, not a rule. If one room is a nursery, or you leave the garage behind, you may only need 3-bedroom space. Compare our storage unit size for a 3-bedroom guide, and for smaller moves see storage unit size for a 2-bedroom and storage unit size for a 1-bedroom.
